Floating Farm

Floating Farm Rotterdam

Floating Farm Rotterdam was the first floating farm in the world and since its creation in 2019, thousands of people from all over the world have come to take a look. Parts of the farm are open for visitors and tours and various events are organised there.

The main goal is to produce healthy food in the city, close to the consumer in a sustainable, innovative, transparent way with animal welfare as a top priority.

For the Floating Farm it is important
- to prevent food losses,
- to reduce the transport of food and
- to improve the quality of the food.

Floating Farm stands for circular farming: more precisely, in addition to supplying fresh dairy to the city, as much as possible of the raw materials used, including the food for the cows, consist of residual waste from the same city!

For example, their animals are already fed beer grain from a number of Rotterdam breweries, bran from Schiedam mills, grass from sports fields in the area and potato peels from a local producer.

The Floating Farm further takes advantage of its position within the community as the recipient of food waste donations while also reaping profits from its animals’ waste.

Social impact
The farm was developed to complement the public’s changing understanding of acceptable or good farming practices, serving as an example of a technological project created in response to changing values in society.

Environmental impact
The Floating Farm’s building facilities that are adaptable to a changing climate. The entire production process is located on the water, meaning they reduce their claim on already scarce farmable land.
